My name is John Allen Mollenhauer. I am a lifestyle and nutrition coach. I help people do the one thing that most people are afraid of doing—change, the way they eat, think and live for better results. And, like you, I too struggled with diet and weight issues, and I did so for decades. Over the years, I went from being an amateur bodybuilder, to a worn-down workaholic who used food to cope, to finally being someone who learned how to eat right and live a healthy lifestyle, successfully.
I discovered that there are really only two ways to eat—nutrient rich or nutrient poor. Rich is better!
This is a picture of me in college, after successfully competing in the Mr. New Jersey competition. Back then, I was the ultimate dieter. I was lean and muscular, but I was incredibly unhealthy. I won contests and physically, I looked great. But, truthfully, I felt sick and terrible all the time.
Like most people, I was brought up eating the SAD Standard American Diet. As a weight lifter, in the off season, I followed the typical body-builder or fitness diet, which I now refer to as a weight loss-only (or muscle-building) method. It comprised eating predominantly fish, chicken, some vegetables, occasional starches and some fruit.
On holidays, and throughout the year, I ate a healthier version of the SAD. Then, when I was in training mode, I would follow a very low-cal, low-carb, high-animal protein diet, for 8-10 weeks to shed of my excess fat and weight. I would also take protein supplements, with some added vitamins, in an isolated form, to give me what I wasn’t getting from my food. I did this while training at the highest intensity.
Following whatever contest I was entering, I would look great for about three days. But then a binge would follow, and I would gain between 20-40 pounds in the blink of an eye.
Because of all the deprivation, all I could think about was food, and eating lots of it! Sadly, today, most people, in general, still follow this dietary routine. Some may look good, but they are really unhealthy.
I realized that we had become a nation convinced that in order to the lose weight gained by eating the SAD, we had to go on weight loss-only diets that depleted our bodies of food and nutrients. And, then, hungry—many of us—REALLY HUNGRY, from this unsatisfying way of eating, we were turning to half-baked “healthier” diets, which were often just “healthier” variations of the SAD.
You know these types of foods. They are sold in attractive, healthy-looking packages that are often defaced with targeted marketing jargon, written especially to keep us diet trapped and reliant on nutrient-poor foods that don’t serve the body well. And the vicious cycle continues.
Wash, Rinse Repeat. Most people stay stuck in this vicious cycle of nutrient-poor eating, indefinitely. I know I did, for a long, long time.
Once I realized this, I finally broke free of this cycle and made the Switch away from eating nutrient poor, to eating nutrient rich. And, now I want to help you do the same—only it won’t take you the same 20 years that it took me. Once I learned how to eat nutrient rich, I naturally lost weight and got down to my ideal weight, pretty quickly. Sure, you could hire a nutritionist, a personal trainer, or call up and order the latest diet that is currently trending in the market. In fact, you have probably tried at least one, if not several of these options.
