The turning point happened in my kitchen. But it wasn’t when I was cooking, eating or washing dishes.

What happened in the kitchen actually took place in my head and changed my life forever and for the better. Here’s how it went down.

There was a huge question looming in my head. Once I articulated my thought bubble out loud, it was my business partner, who assisted in reminding me of the answer I already knew. I didn’t ask him if I looked fat in my dress. I already knew that I did. I didn’t ask him about our business. I already knew the status of that as well. What I did ask him was about possibility.

Fear and Doubt (they are nasty cousins and their job is to wreak havoc on your thoughts) had taken over my head and my ability to think clearly on an issue I had been struggling with. Did he think it was POSSIBLE for me to pull off a dream that I had had for 20 years…? With the understanding, of course, that I was 2 months short of turning 50 years old, 35 pounds overweight, mother of 3 and still held the dream of being a figure (bodybuilding) competitor? SO I asked if he thought it even remotely possible for me to achieve this goal.

His response opened the door for me to kick those cousins out once and for all.

Figure Competition Day

He said “IF YOU THINK YOU CAN, THEN YOU CAN”.

SO at that very moment…the shift happened.

It was a colossal switch in my mindset. I remembered that that was the very message I had taught my children. I had a choice.

I could choose to (1) listen to the nasty cousins and other naysayers, the biggest one being myself, who told me that I was too old, hormonal, and menopausal. Those who said my body would never respond, that I should accept my body as is, that I looked good for my age, that all women have fat around their waists and that I would never be able to pull this off or lose the weight that I had struggled with for so long.

OR… (2) I could decide that I was going to do it, no matter what.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS:

I decided to do it.

I put my food down, nothing was going to stop me.

With this decision came the reality of beginning a process, a process of believing, letting go, trusting and relationship building. I found inner strength, fierce determination, persistence, challenge and love.

She’s my partner Rosie Battista.

Not only did she lose weight in a Nutrient Rich way, she fulfilled a long held ambitious dream to compete in a figure competition and better yet with her 20 year old daughter who is also a site to behold.

Rosie joined me about 10 months ago, to help me found the new NutrientRich.com and The Lifestyle Coaching Center where we operate from, when the dream to compete in a figure competition entered her mind.

This was not a simple decision for Rosie; at that time she was dealing with some major life stresses that warranted changes she needed to be make; in addition to facing all the challenges that would face her preparing for her first figure competition ever.

Not only had she never done something like this before, but she was going to do it with her 20 year old daughter, while turning 50, while selling her home, while moving, and getting into a new aspect of her career. All of this meant she was going to face at times overwhelming changes, emotions, and demands on her energy.

I was suspect that this was a good idea, given all that she was in process with to restructure her life, and it was challenging for me, because as someone promoting health, most body building and figure competitions promote the exact opposite (even though it is healthy to lose weight) and I know from having been an amateur body builder years ago.

But Rosie, was determined to do it and determined to do it in a healthy way.

The Turning Point Was In Her Kitchen.

Now when Rosie makes a decision she really makes a decision as I look back in retrospect. Things had been very challenging for her last year with some major life changes that prompted the need for hard decisions. Stress of that kind has a major impact on you, and your weight, often times even if you are eating healthy. Cortisol and stress hormones and the stress that cause their release are great weight gainers. Even if you are eating nutrient rich foods, you can gain weight if you are eating for the wrong reasons and when you are not hungry. That was the problem for Rosie, and she didn’t have a goal other than weight loss. (more on that later).

This is Now: Rosie in August 2010

It took some weeks of contemplation, (can you imagine?) but once she did, Rosie provided any lookers on, one of the most compelling examples of transformation one could want to witness. (I watched it)

I can’t be prouder of Rosie, and frankly because of her I’m competing in a 10k race next week following a month of training running 3-6 miles per training day. She helped me make needed changes from where I was at and I thank her. Actually she’s been coaching me on taking my diet to the next level of healthy eating!

I hope that at some point you get a chance to work with Rosie or take one of her courses; she has lots of experience to share.

We’ll be sharing more about Rosie’s Transformation; particularly how she lost weight the Nutrient Rich way and exercised while achieving her most ambitious life goal and without burning out to stand side by side her also beautiful daughter with tantalizing Allure, Beauty and Grace.

Stay tuned.

Nutrient Rich whole foods will provide the body with consistent food energy that prevents over consumption and leads to natural weight loss, while processed foods can lead to depletion of energy, decreased mood, and may lead to certain diseases of the heart and digestive system… and of course, obesity.

Food is the fuel necessary for our body to run well, and what we eat directly affects the way we feel physically and emotionally. Weight loss or “fat loss” is not a basic need for each person, because being overweight is not a normal or natural condition. But if you are over weight, and want to lose weight naturally, eating nutrient rich snacks (meals), beverages and desserts can will result in natural weight loss.

Every person has unique dietary needs based on genetics, environment, and lifestyle, but that does not mean to lose weight naturally, one person needs to eat animal products vs another person needs to eat plant foods as some people learn on blood type diets.

Nutrient Rich foods come from plants, animal products (even some refined foods) are rich in some nutrients, but as a whole food, animal products which are missing whole categories of nutrients, are nutrient poor. Natural weight loss is a process that must be based on nutrient rich whole foods, otherwise, you will gain weight and get stuck in a yo yo (weight gain, weight loss) dieting cycle, because your body needs all the micro nutrients (phytochemicals), vitamins, minerals, water, and fiber, above and beyond carbohydrate, fat and protein, in order for hunger to shut off.

A diet based on animal products cannot offer that stable foundation.

Listed below are several suggestions for supplying your body with fuel that will provide the body with nourishment and please the palate.

Enjoy discovering what you like best, this is just a sample.

Sprouted Nuts and Seeds

Sprouting (soaked in water overnight) helps the nuts to be easier to digest and increase availability of nutrients

Healthy nuts can include almonds, pecans, walnuts, peanuts, and cashews

Hummus and whole grain or sprouted breads and crackers

The protein and fat found in hummus helps repair and build muscles and increases concentration

Sprouted grains increase the content of vitamin c, and several B vitamins and helps with absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc.

Make water your beverage of choice each day

Our body is made up mostly of water and our body needs it to thrive at all times and more so during stress and illness

Mineral water can increase additional benefits of hydration by adding nutrients to the body

Avoid sodas, especially those with artificial sweeteners

Phosphoric acid in soft drinks blocks absorption of calcium and magnesium

Artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, are neurotoxins and break down into poison in the body

Include Herbal Teas

Provides nutrients and has soothing qualities

Does not contain caffeine, which negatively impacts digestive health

Yerba Mate

Avoid drinking beverages with meals

Interrupts the digestive process

Natural sweeteners help control a dip or spike in blood sugar, stabilizing mood and physical energy.

Avoid drinks, like diet sodas, that contain artificial sweeteners

Aspartame breaks down into methanol, a known poison

May cause dizziness, visual impairment, severe muscle aches, numbing of extremities, pancreatitis, seizures and depression

Phosphoric acid in soft drinks blocks absorption of calcium and magnesium contributing to fractured bones in children and osteoporosis in adults and a compromised immune system

Nutrient-Rich Snacks

Choose snacks that feature whole, natural ingredients and avoid white flours, refined sugars, or hydrogenated vegetable oils.

Beverages

Desserts

Choose desserts that contain natural fruit, whole grains, and vegetables (yes vegetables!)

By Rosie Battista, Nutritional Education Trainer and Lifestyle Coach

As far as I am concerned I am nearly done obsessing over numbers by counting calories.

I spend most of my life counting calories as my method for weight control. It was either the amount of calories, the number on the scale, the size of my jeans, or the candles on my birthday cake. It was always a numbers game. It was a simple concept; the lower the number the better I feel I could control my weight. These numbers only succeeded in making me feel fatter and older the more I obsessed over them. It was not till later in my life that I realized that, in reality, none of these things were the right thing to focus on.

The first thing we all need to stop counting is our calorie consumption. Believe it or not, life was not always this way and weight control happened naturally. I began to wonder when the phenomenon of calorie counting began and whether or not people understood what a calorie actually is. On a whim, I asked a few random people of random ages. Here is what they came up with in response to my question, “What is a calorie?” One person simple said that “it has something to do with food intake.” Number two said, “you’re allowed to take in a certain amount and that equals fat, so you really need to watch how many you take in.” And lastly, and my personal favorite, responded, “I don’t know, but they are not a good thing!” By no means am I making fun of these people because with all the media clutter, bad press, and deceitful marketing, I admit that I also had to do my own research to get the cold hard facts.

In 1907, one of the first known nutritionists, Wilbur Atwater, invented the calorimeter. If you burn food in a calorimeter, you could measure the ash and heat to find out how much “energy” is released and therefore how much “energy” is in the food. In other words, calories equal energy. Now we can apply this concept to our bodies, which act much like the calorimeter, even though our bodies don’t quite “burn” calories like the calorimeter yet spend energy breaking down our food into “energy.” After analyzing the calorie through our chemistry goggles, we can further discuss why a “calorie” should not be feared and obsessively counted. After all, we do need calories to sustain life and have the food energy to go about our busy days.

Fad diets love using the calorie counting method and these diets and new ones flood the market daily. Food companies even make calorie content their main selling point.

Just consider a 100 Calorie Pack of Hostess Twinkie Bites. (Who decided that 100 calories was the baseline for a healthy snack anyway?) Even Vitamin Water’s new line of Zero Drink is obviously named for the zero calorie content. So does this mean that you can drink all you want because it has no calories?

Let’s face it, these selling ploys work and we continue to count our calories because we love the simplicity of it. It is much easier to work by numbers than to truly understand the complexity of a balanced diet. Do not let the calorie content cloud out the true nutrition value of your foods you need to eat or dictate your body’s true nutritional needs.

There are a many other reasons to base your food choices on criteria other than calorie content. For example, if the food you eat contains fiber, it will keep you feeling full longer. And if you are eating nutrient rich foods your body gets the nutrients it needs with much less food. Nutrient Rich foods help promote health and longevity. I guess you can call that a bigger bang for your buck, another thing we Americans love.

Here are 2 simple tips, to wean yourself off of the counting craze and to help you start getting more nutrients from the calories you are taking in.

Remember this motto:

Instead of counting calories, make every calorie count!

TIP 1

Eat foods that are nutrient rich (foods that are as close to nature as possible – these foods have no calorie counting label on them!). They are foods like, dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, and fresh fruits. They will keep you fuller longer and you will wind up eating less naturally with more energy.

TIP 2

Stop thinking about the calories of the foods you eat and start thinking about how the calories will fuel your body make you feel. Do you feel the same when you eat two cookies as you do when you eat a nutrient rich apple?

On a personal note, I’ve let go of all numbers and counting…neither the scale, the label in my jeans or the 50 candles on my last birthday cake mean anything. I feel great, count, less calories and enjoy myself more than ever before.

It doesn’t hurt to know the calorie count in a food, but you don’t need to constant count calories by playing the numbers game. What you need is to make every calorie count, and you can only do that successfully when you eat a nutrient rich diet.

Making every calorie count is the key to natural weight loss!

We are not just talking about the people who have lost their excess weight after failing for years on one diet after another, but diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, asthma, autoimmune illnesses (including lupus) and headaches have simply melted away.

Published medical research already documents this as the most effective weight loss method ever recorded in medical history. There was an average two year weight loss of 53 pounds. Most importantly they kept the weight off.

DrFuhrman’s complete two–book set actually teaches you how to prefer a NutrientRich diet–style over a disease–promoting diet. The hallmark of healthy eating is to consume more foods that contain a high nutrient density and less food with a low nutrient density.

To make it easy, Dr. Fuhrman has scored thousands of foods so that in each of the 4 phases, the nutrient density of the suggested menus increases. The outcome is that when you eat enough NutrientRich foods you can reverse most medical problems without drugs. If diets never worked for you in the past you will now understand why and you will be motivated to lose your excess weight and get well again. Eat For Health can save your life.

Dr. Fuhrman‘s MANDI food and meal scoring system (patent pending) lets you know exactly how healthy your diet is. You can see this as well using the Food Class System at NutrientRich.com. You can choose your own level of nutritional excellence and you can move forward to a higher level at your own pace when you are ready or you can pump it up to phase four to get maximal weight loss and therapeutic effect to reverse disease. Nutrient Rich Food, Not Drugs, Is The Prescription

Book two contains the menus and recipes. It teaches you how to make this diet work easily for you and your family. With over 150 delicious and easy recipes, it makes Nutrient Rich eating truly gourmet. From strengthening your taste buds to dealing with temptation, restaurant eating, to eating on the road, this program will make sure you can do it, enjoy it, and even fit it into your busy schedule. It is guaranteed to change your life forever.

A scientifically proven system to have you lose your food addictions and actually prefer NutrientRich foods over nutrient poor foods.

A gradual, 4 – phase program with custom menus so you can adjust the program to your individual needs and preferences

Everyday recipes that taste phenomenal and are easy to make

A nutrient scoring system to measure the nutritional quality of your diet

Remove toxic hunger and you will succeed at losing weight and keeping it off forever

Use Nutrient Rich foods to beat disease, get rid of diabetes, lower your blood pressure and cholesterol without drugs and protect yourself against cancer and get more pleasure out of eating.

There isn’t a more successful approach to eating anywhere, because unlike diets where weight loss is the primary driving factor with health second, when you Eat for Health, the nutrient value is considered first. You eat Better Not Less, and naturally eat less making weight loss .
